credit card payment

Hi Kathie,

My fantasy, if need be, for such outdoor or other Shows as
had (actual rather than taxidermy or schill or 'potential'
or maybe-not ) 'buyers' as could only use Credit Cards for
their sorry selves...

Would be to have a nice little Lap-Top Computer sitting
there, to be running on Battery when absolutely needed...and
a Cell Phone modum in the ready, and just go on line and let
the gumpers use 'paypal' right then and there...have a Chair
for them to do so and a little Table-room allowed for their
elbows...

That and give them a complimentary 'mint'...

Another possibility is to have them fill out a little 'form'
you can easily make...as has a place for their e-mail and
'phone number and address and clearly-printed-name and so on
on it, as THEY fill out so you do not get overtaxed with
chores, and as has room to say what the item 'is' and a
carbon paper betwist 'em for each your own Copy.

...and with the understanding that you will ship the item to
them for an agreed total as appears on their copy of the
form right then and there ( and who cares if you are a
couple bucks off one way or the other on the shipping costs)
and...that they shall send their check, Money Orcer or Cash
or whatever the heck, or do the paypal thing, when they get
'home'...and you will then ship the (already sequestered,
tagged and so on of ready-to-go) item...'then'...in fact, if
not too hard to do so, go ahead and make a little happy
'show' of packaging it up to do so right then and
there...in-a-box...with colored excelsior and tissue-paper
or something...

That works pretty okeydokey too...

Hell, I usually just let 'em walk with the thing anyway
(whateveritis) and wait for the dough...saves 'shipping'
chores...and I have not had enough stiffs to ever give me
any sleepless nights...if I am not feeling 'trustful' of
them, then I would wait for the dough, hold it to the
'light', and then ship...

If ye let 'em 'walk'...there is no harm on the little 'form'
haveing been filled out anyway...so if a friendly reminder
seems appropriate after a while of no-dough...you have a way
to reach 'em. I have had that a few times, where someone
'forgot', and they came around just fine with a friendly
remind to do so...allswellthatendswell...fine with me...

Love,

Phil

I too need to know how one can take credit cards or debit cards for
payment. I know I can if I am at the shop where I have phone, but if I am
at a show what do I do? Cash isn't someting that people carry , it has
turned into a plastic world, and we need to go with it. Thanks Kathie

Does anyone use the card processing service through the potters council?
Any pros and cons?

I use Nova for my credit card processing. I'm not sure what the rates are
right now, but the reason that I went with them is that they allow my
account to go dormant in the off season with no monthly minimums.
I have a manual "knuckle buster" machine and I use the phone to key in the
card numbers when I get home from a show. I absolutly have had higher sales
since getting the machine. Lately I've been tucking the sign out of direct
line of sight so that people will think of cash or checks first. Some
artists have a small sign " credit cards accepted, but cash or check
prefered" I'll be moving soon and doing more retail out of my studio, i'm
going to start shopping for a swipe machine and talk to my current company
about ways to get a better rate. By the way I get a better rate on debit or
corporate cards, but can't tell until the statement arrives at the end of
the month.

Nice fantasy, Phil, but it seems like a heck of a lot of work. And you're
assuming everyone is computer savvy and already has a Paypal Account.
Otherwise, they have to set one up, and they are spending too much time in
your booth. Get them in; get them out. Both of you will be happier for it.

>>later' technique>

I don't do that many shows a year but thought about getting the
credit card rig. After a quick calculation of what it was going to
cost me, I decided it was less expensive to do the same. (with the
same checking-the-gut-feeling about the person's scruples.)

So far, it has worked like a champ. Not only have I won loyal
customers, but word of mouth about 'actually trusting someone to hold
up their end of the bargain' makes for great customer goodwill.*

So far, I have never been stiffed either with a check or a walk-away.

*There was a time when, upon selling a business, a thing called
Customer Goodwill (i.e. good business reputation) was a quantified
amount added into the monetary value of the business.

Hi,
2 years ago I hired a gizmo that was hand held, like a very chunky =
mobile phone and charged up like a phone, it connected to a clearing =
agency and accepted virtually all credit/debit cards, surely they must =
be available in U.S.A ? It was primarily promoted to restaurants that =
had lots of outside covers, I now notice that my local (very rural) =
garage has a similar system that they just seem to leave plugged in and =
charging up all the time.=20
I ended up sending it back because I couldn't get a signal at my =
workshop, which rather defeated the whole object.
Best, Pat.

In Belgium it is common to pay via bank transfer. We pay all our bills
this way. You can even get your own preprinted "Virments" from the bank.

At my last show, when people said thay'd love to buy something but did't
have cash with them, I just gave them my card with my bank count number
on it and let them take the work away.

Everyone has paid. One person paid via telephone while I was wrapping
his purchase.
