mixing a claybody

Bill (William Schran):
Dr Carty didn't focus on forming methods but I assume he was
chiefly concerned with ram-press forming, which would bypass the
"slop" method of body preparation. why do an extra step (filtration of a
slip) if slip-casting is not dominant nowadays at many whiteware plants.
as his paper will say: standard clay mixers (eg, the Soldner),
fail to "unclump" certain ingredients, and it is the clumps that lead to
cracking and warping at high cones. when he used a clay muller
(high-shear) the body had much fewer clumps, and pyroplastic deformation
was dramatically reduced.
in the case of studio potters who mix their own bodies, perhaps
the slop method should be de riguer; this would minimize clumps. then
ageing would yield a more plastic body for wheel-work.
btw, Bill, your ISP is not accepting posts.

til later. peace Tom.
