gallery representation

All the galleries that we are in found us. Mostly at shows. This is one of
the other main reasons we do the shows. After they approach us, I will
usually visit the gallery to see if anyone else that I know has work there
so I can get feed back from them about the gallery. I like to see if the
gallery is a good fit for our work. If the traffic there is good (don't want
pieces sitting around collecting dust) and most important do they pay their
vendors on time. These are a few of the things I try to check on.

What's the best way to get gallery representation, find the gallery,
evaluate their ability to promote and sell your artwork, and what should you
pay them?

So for this year we have been to 3 pottery fairs (only pottery) and sales
have been way low but on the other hand our gallery sales have been great.

People come into the booth and go on and on about how beautiful our pieces
are and how much they really love the glazes and colors, but few buy. If
they didn't mean it wouldn't they just say nothing at all??? They will go
to other booths and make purchases of cheaper pieces. Our pieces average
about $50.00 and up but I do have some less than $50.00. I guess I need to
get busy and crank out a bunch of small items just for shows.

We just attended a pottery show this weekend. I guess I'm just venting a
little here and wondering if anyone else was having this experience??

I just had high hopes for the pottery shows this year seeing how the
galleries were doing so well.

Looking forward to the day when we don't have to do as many shows!!!

Thanks for letting me vent a little!!!

I've approached many dozens of galleries in the past twenty years, and the only way it ever really worked out for me and my work has been when a gallery approached me, because they were excited about my work. I think the best way to get gallery representation is to write articles in major publications and find ways to get the word out about your work, and let them find you.
