In going through some links at a web site, I came across a Swiss
pottery supply company advertising a interesting design for a sink
trap.
Here's the link: http://www.keramikbedarf.ch/
The device is named "Clean Box", just click on that name.

We used this design in Eastern Michigan University's ceramic studio in
the sixties. It's essentially a bucket within a bucket. Slop drains into
the inner bucket. As is fills, it overflows into the outer bucket which
is connected to the drain at the top of the outer bucket. Only clean
water ends up in the drain. Every once in a while you clean out the slop
from the inner bucket. No need to spend lots of bucks to buy something
you can easily make for yourself.
