(Standing up and applauding) HEAR, HEAR!
I have nothing against abstraction. But when I see stuff that
looks like someone left a bag of clay out to freeze overnight
and then fired the result, or took a few bags of clay and threw
them together, the only thought that comes to my mind is
"What a waste of perfectly good clay." If I say this out loud,
someone is bound to tell me, in very snobbish tones, "Oh, well
you just don't -understand- it." (unsaid but clear: "You
plebian little maker-of-teapots!")
Can anyone name for me one single piece of truly great art that
can't be instantly appreciated because it is not first and foremost
pleasing to the eye? Not "after I look through my books a bit"
but right off the top of your head?
And on a somewhat related note: am I the only person on this list
who has anxiety dreams about all the kaolin on the planet being
used up for toilets and false teeth and dubious sculpture and
there being none left for me?

It's said all college students go through this dream - well I lived it!
My senior undergrad, last semester. All studio classes except one
academic course, Ethics, I think (how ironic). Getting ready for my
final senior show, many, many hours in the studio and overnighters
firing the kilns. About third of the way through the semester,
started skipping the Ethics class, halfway through the semester,
forgot I had the class. Some one asked if I had dropped the class. Oh
my God, I gotta pass this course to graduate. Went that week and took
the midterm - passed it! Went to most of the classes for rest of
semester, passed, graduated.....
