OK..... we're live!

You can check out what is happening here at Kanayama via the live webcam
which is now online. The address is http://makigama.jp/ and the webcam
page is off either the Japanese or the English pages.

The camera is located at the moment in the main public workspace that we
are sharing. It is an open facility where the public will be able to come
in and see what we are doing. Unfortunately.... it does not show the kilns
or the gallery space. Not sure if they are planning on trying to move it
sometime.

My table and wheel are (unfortunately )off to the left of the current
aiming of the camera. Shoganai. (No ginger)

Remember that if you are in North America the time difference is just about
a reversal of day and night. Most evenings we are doing slide lectures,
discussions and so on. And sometimes we are firing kilns.

So...... enjoy the view.

best,

....................john

Also via the calendar you can access a lot of excellent still pictures
of the various activities. Tony C is much in evidence, doing stunning
pots!
Sorry John I don't know what you look like so can't identify you :-(

This is the direct link to the web cam. I was watching Tony and
John work earlier today:

http://makigama.jp/en/livec.html

The lights are turned out now (it is 1:53AM in Japan right
now.) But if you check in about 7 hours, you might see some activity.
(I noticed that John was the first person in the workshop this morning
at 9:30AM)

Hi all.

Steve...... I'm around, I promise you .

Lee.... sometimes I am first in....and sometimes I'm not. Sometimes one or
more of us is there late at night...... but usually we are drinking beer,
wine or sake and telling lies . Typically we are all working in the
workshop space 9 - 6 ish, local time. Plus doing / listening to evening
slide presentations / discussions that are held elsewhere in the main
residenc building. And then there is the firing time when we are away from
the webcam space. Sorry that other stuff is not "on camera".

Tony C. and Carol Ann M. leave for Tokyo and then to Canada tomorrow
morning about 8 AM. Those of us here for the whole month are unhappy to
see them go so soon. It has been a great group so far. Lots of great pots
being made and good discussions. Influences are running around the room
from one person to the next. But although they are leaving, a contingent
of three potters from Greece will arrive to replace them at about 1:30 PM.

We unloaded the small noborigama this afternoon (had a sign on webcam
sayiing "Gone to Pot" and "Kama dashi (unloading lkiln)". We all got some
awesome youhen pots. After unloading.... we were sitting outside using 180
grit wet silicon carbide sanding paper cleaning up the pieces. We did a
critique session this evening and the pots will be on sale to the public
tomorrow.

The webcam sometimes can be a bit "cranky". I think it is because they
have a slow uplink connection. But check back and it usually clears up.

Yesterday, we did a bit of sightseeing and hit an onsen again. We had
dinner at a little sushi place that has a conveyor belt and you pick what
you want off the belt as the stuff goes by. Tony had some raw tuna, cooked
eel, and a number of other things. Still no octopus though .

Well..... it is after midnight here. Off to bed.

best,

..............john

Tonight we spent discussing the plan we will use to fire the Olsen
combination anagama/groundhog kiln (two fireboxes and two chimneys at right
angles to each other) which was built here last summer. This will be the
third firing of this kiln. Past firings have resulted in very even
coloration on the pieces and some very high temperatures in the firebox
areas. We spent the evening discussing possible changes to make to get
more variation in colors and lower firebox temps, and then setting up a
detailed stacking plan and firing plan. We each will have four six hour
shifts to cover.

If you are following the live webcam....... you will see us removing pots
from the workshop space starting at about 9 AM tomorrow. Out of camera
range.... we'll be taking them up to the wood kiln which is located about
300 yards from the workshop. Much will be moved via a truck and a little
motorized pallet mover. It will take all day to stack the kiln. Then we
will start a 74-78 hour wood firing at 6 AM thge next day. So a number of
us will not be in the workshop at any given time as we take our stoking
shifts. But the rest will still be making pots..... cause there are more
firings yet to load.

Unfortunately, Tony and Carol Ann will miss the actual firing of this
kiln..... since they are in the air right now headed for Canada...... but
we will be loading their work into the kiln. We'll try to get them
pictures of some of the best pieces. We certainly miss them. (Tony will
be heartbroken....... we had some octopus at dinner tonight and he missed
it .) Christos and Maro and Maria from Greece arrived just after Tony
and Carol Ann left...so we have some new energy into the mix.

So...... the saga continues. Also check the 2004 pages of the makigama
website for new still pictures every now and then.

best,

....................john

PS: After yet another try..... I have once again today decided I am NOT
a "porcelain potter".
