....from a brick wall can I place a kiln? While talking to a man at an =
arts fair I was explaining my set up of my soon to operating kiln and he =
advised 18 inches from a wall. It's doable but will be a traffic =
hazard in my small basement. The kiln is an old Vulcan - 27" wide =
hexagon shaped. I have cement blocks which I am putting up a barrier on =
either side of the kiln and if the wall should be 18 inches then should =
these should be 18 inches also? Walls and floor are all cement and =
brick. Would 12' work or am I pushing it?=20
I gotta explain all this to the husband who is my techie. He understands =
electric and computers but not kilns - he thinks it's a monster! That's =
why it's been forever to get him to hook it up. My patience and your =
good advice is getting me closer tho'! I'm getting a possible commitment =
to this week! Watch it be 90 degrees out! Whew!

Edy, placing a wall on each side of the kiln may cause heat to build up
around the kiln. This is why we recommend that kilns are not fired in small,
enclosed spaces.

The 18" minimum distance between the kiln and wall is good advice.

To keep the kiln out of the traffic flow, you could also purchase a kiln
stand that has casters. Then move the kiln out of the way when it is not in
use. I also suggest avoiding the use of extension cords.

I think L&L advises 12" from any combustible surface, but I would
think this is dealing with a wall on one side & open the rest of the
way around the kiln.

Why do you want to build a wall around the kiln? I would think the
12" from the brick/cement wall is ok, but you'll want to leave the
other sides open so the area surrounding the kiln doesn't get too hot.

How about venting? You ARE going to vent the kiln, aren't you?

Edy Lynn:

Howdy. I wouldn't place the kiln any closer than 12 inches from
anything at all especially walls. 16 inches is better but I would
advise 12 minimum. Your kiln manual will give you the specs. =20

Even if the walls are not something that will burn, heat build up around
the kiln will cause problems. You need to have enough air space around
the kiln to protect the kiln components like switches etc. Barrier
walls may be counter productive because of this. That there monster
needs to be able to breath, needs good clean air to help do its job.
Having all sides free will give you greater flexibility when loading and
unloading the kiln as well.

Have you got an active vent system for this kiln?

Smarter people that I will respond to this thread as well.

Gotthis message from this guy who is from Paragon Kilns whose kilns are very
similer to mine. Hmmmm-not sure what to do now. Have a few ideas in head for
a moveable stand but not sure if feasible. So close ..yet so far.....
