Thank you Bruce/Steve for your tips. Your thoughts/pointers are very
helpful. I aim inclined to explore both directions in the next year.

We'll most likely be working in the cone 04-06 range. I like the idea of
gradually moving away from/supplementing commercial glazes and developing a
mini-materials' lab. Rich re math/chemistry/earth science connections.

I notice in perusing cone 04-06 recipes that certain materials recur, as
Gerstley Borate, 3134, etc. I think this will help define our starting
points.

I ran across tutorials by Victor Bryant
which focus on ceramics history. Approaching low-fire experiments from
historical perspective is very appealing (as using fine sand + soda ash +
copper oxide for Egyptian paste), staying as close as possible to original
ingredients.

Of course, safety re toxicity is important.
