Electric Kiln Building Workshop in Santa Fe NM - Jully 10 & 11, 2004.
Larry Fielder has been building, and teaching people how to build, electric
kilns for glass fusing and casting since the late 1980s. Altho his kiln
designs are targeted for glass, the kiln designs can be modified to
accomodate ceramics as well. And if you've considered working in glass,
this course could help you build your own kiln to experiment with for much
less than it costs to buy a commercial kiln.
He has designs for a top loader and a front loader, and I added my design
for a large bell kiln (top lifts up) that is 6 ft long by 3 ft wide. We
have all the info you need for sources of elements, fiber, and brick, as
well as wiring diagrams and tips. The course comes with a 130-page notebook
full of detailed information.
I designed my bell kiln to accomodate tall cast glass sculptures as well as
tall ceramic pieces that I will bisque fire and then finish with no fire
techniques. I have made very large ceramic murals in the past and it would
be very easy to fire them in this kiln.
This course will give you the ability to design kilns to accomodate your
unique types of work, in ceramic or glass.
Cost is $350 and lunch is included for both days. Santa Fe is a wonderful
destination in the summer, with over 200 galleries, bronze foundries,
outdoor sculpture gardens, etc, etc. It is situated against the Sangre de
Cristo Mountains at 7000 ft, so daytime temps are in the low 90s and nights
are cool. Come join us for a fun time in Santa Fe and expand your horizons
artistically!
