I got a phone call from a potter - Darryl Piatt - who is trying to get the
needed approval for installing a gas kiln.

His neighbors are afraid it will be a problem for them so he can't get a
permit to have it installed.

He lives in southern Oregon near Coos Bay - about 200 miles north of San
Francisco.

Anyone who thinks they may have information which may be of help to him -
his email address is:

ponchas@piatstudio.com <<< this is not right

ponchas@piattstudio.com <<< this is the right address.

Sorry folks - RR

Hi,
I am in Australia and not the US. However this might be of some use.
I have done hundreds of legal gas kiln installations here in OZ as part
of my Hot & Sticky Company business. Custom built kilns is what we
specialise in. We have built and installed our gas, electric and wood
fired kilns in some way out locations here, and all done legally.
The answer is to read the Standards Handbook.
Here we have the Australian and New Zealand Standard for gas appliances
and an installation Code.
Surely there must be an American Standards book.
Buy it, read it, comply with all the clauses that apply to your
situation.
Consult with the Gas inspectors, see what they want, and do it.
If you do everything that is required by the law, they will have to
approve your kiln.
To comply with the law you may have to compromise your initial ideas.
Then your kiln will be safe and no one can complain.
Best wishes
