Someone sent me a link to Santa Fe Clay and it got me thinking about
John Reeve. Did a search on his name and see that Minnesota Clay is
still carrying his glaze book that I have mentioned here. Info below:
http://www.mm.com/mnclayus/pdf/06books.pdf
A Potters Way to Understand Glazes (Book one)
by John Reeve. 61 pages. Covers the essentials of layman's glaze
chemistry--triaxial blends,
fluxes, wood ash glazes, opacifiers, etc. Explains basic ingredients and
how they work. Not
a recipe book.

Lee: i know you are the first one reading this post. I need some info.
John is probably the most famous or in famous potter's potter from
Barrie, Ontario. I loved his work and never got to see enough of it. A
piece of his is being sold and a friend of mine is going to look at it
on Sunday. he has described it as Bizen ware. Do you know if John ever
worked or studied in Japan. It may be wood fired from Leach's kiln in
St. Ives. the piece is 24" tall and the asking price is around a
grande. I'll send pics next week. Because he never really had a studio
other than working with MacKenzie or someone else i don't know if his
work has a large value or not. he was the consumate potter's potter.
thanks for your thoughts.
Best,
Tony

Tony,
I never heard of John working in Japan. I do recall that he was
suppose to have taken over St. Ives. I am not sure if that was when the
Leach's were trying to set up in Kyoto.
John's work always sold at the same prices as MacKenzie's in his
sales shop. I have a few pieces in storage. I dug up some of my friend,
Dirk Gilispe (Omaha) I had in storage. His and John's work has a similar
feel. It is beyond me why neither of these two potters aren't working.
They are my early inspiration.

I sold a large teapot of his on eBay and it brought $40.00, about what I
paid for it second hand.

I don't know what the value of pieces may be. I
have several pieces of his work, teapots and a couple
bowls, etc. BUT - I got them in "trade" , so - dunno.
It's very interesting that he had no studio of his own. I
did not know that. Potters know everything. Collectively.
