silver nitrate question for the chemists

updated fri 2 jul 04

One of my fellow students at school made a raku glaze with silver nitrate. It's lovely and fires with many beautiful irridescent colors, especially where applied thinly.

The glaze instructions say to make it fresh for use and not store it. Why? Can the glaze be stabilized?

Many thanks,

Hi Linda,

I'm not one of the "chemists" on the list, but use silver nitrate in one of my raku glazes very often. If you store it for over a week, it will turn black (it reacts to light) and lose the silver effect. I always mix it up fresh after much experience.

Also, don't touch the crystals with wet hands -- your skin will blacken and it will have to wear off!
