Hay crew,
The annual "Art On The Rocks" held in Marquette, Michigan is July 24-25.
Free shuttle service available. Also, as usual with some large outdoor
shows, there is a non-juryed show along with. I visited last year, quite
lovely. Met a few U.P. potters. Indoor facilities available in case of
frost.

Hay Crew,
I must admit there are no indoor facilities in case of frost for the
jury ed "Art on the Rocks 2004" and the non jury ed "Outback Art Fair"
last weekend in Marquette, Michigan. We did have some near Ishpeming and
spots on Friday though. I needed a road trip so I went on Sunday the
24th..
This time I went to the "Outback" first. William Hagerty of Wetmore was
back with some descent functional gas fired ware. Then his buddy next
door, Michael Verlinden from Marquette, recognized me from when I
visited the spring faculty show at Bay Collage in Escanaba. Mike was
throwing and firing raku in a trash can kiln. It was a pretty neat set
up they had there, and I got to help with the lid for a pull. That was
awfully kind of Mike, he could see I was jooonesin to help with a
firing. Haven't been around a firing since the Anagama 2002, or was it
2001, in Kalamazoo. Took me a little while to recover.
Moving on, there were other potters but I wanted to put Tagger back in
the truck and catch the shuttle to Presque Isle and "Art on the Rocks".
The exposed bedrock there is known as a pillow lava. Upon arriving a
lady started following me along to tell me she could see I was a thinker
and a reader and started pitching her books about her form of religious
psychosis along with 3 other books she put out since her husband died
now she's 62. I've got her piece of paper here somewhere but I needed a
map of the show.
There were 24 people making some art with clay. One kid from last year,
Ryan Dalmar near Marquette, continues to show promise and improvement
and continues to pursue wood firing. I did want to hook up with as many
potters up here as time allowed and I learned from others where to get
some clays when I'm ready. I took a bunch of pictures, of course I
asked permission after talking a while. On th way out there was a
display of the Dichloric glass Gawaine Dart started making recently.
That's pretty neat stuff with all those layers of patterns, colors, and
3D effects.
That turned out to be a great afternoon, I even made my gas money back.
When I got off the shuttle I picked up some Astreka Pine cones my non
timber product buyer needs and down the road I found a bunch more Red
Pine. Gettin ready for Christmas? Hope I can get some brick up before
brushin season starts in September. I picked up 120 in the van today.
I'm not in a frenzy yet but I am inspired. Stay in there!
