about 15 years ago i was looking for thick, heavy bamboo.
did not have a clue being here in minnesota. no bamboo
grows, and what does grow south of here is like a skinny fishing
pole.
so, i called a place in san francisco....something like:
coastal stake co.
they make stakes for the wine/grape industry.
i said to the guy on the phone.
`hey, you...you got any big bamboo trees?`
he says `yah, got one at my feet`.
i said. `how big round?`
he said `8 inches.
i said `how long?`
he said `9 feet`.
i said `good, send it to me`.
he said. `how`.
i said `ups`.
he said...`ok.`
he cut it in three foot lengths
wrapped plastic wrap around the bundle.
shipped it ground ups.
i got it three days later.
still have a lot left. cost me 20 bucks.
plus 6 bucks shipping.
big bamboo. make any tool in the pottery world that would
be normally made of wood. sharp 45 sticks...cut like butter.
you get big slabs of flat bamboo wood from 8 inch rounds. slice
them with a big knife and hit with a wooden mallet.
so, it can be gotten, but you have to be creative.

A quick search of Yahoo Yellow pages didn't reveal such a place and
it also seems that they use wood poles for the grape plants now.
However, I found this:
