grottalie work ethic

The question of work ethic reminded me of the potter I worked next to
for three years when I was doing production work in Sesto Fiorentino,
Italy (near Florence). This guy was originally from an ancient
pottery center in the "heal of the boot" called Grottalie. He worked
16 hours a day, on the wheel, for six days a week and 8 hours on
Sunday. When I knew him he had been working that schedule for close
to thirty years. While younger potters were giving up because the
pain in their back, wrists, or shoulder had reached a point they
could not stand; he had no problems at all. He was just a remarkable
worker and as good a potter as I have seen. He was already seventy
when I last saw him, and since that was 24 years ago, he is not
likely making pots now.

I thought some on the list might be interested in seeing what a
pottery workshop in Grottalie like.
