Need your input guys and gals.
Studio of 200 retirees. Studio Equipped better than some colleges. About 90% of members are inexperienced beginners. Even most of those with more experience are still beginners in glaze applications.
Purpose of group is to provide a place to have fun learning about and making hand made pottery. Use cone 5/6 glazes oxidation. Also do raku.
Need some videos to use in conjuction with an on-going monthly "hand on" program of exploring glazing. i.e. for them to check out and view on their own outside of "class" time.
Need input on two types of videos.
What is the general opinion on Robin Hopper’s Series on Glazing?
Jim Rombergs raku video?
Would like a series on glazes.
1. Oxidation glaze Application techniques. Preferably a series.
2. Raku glaze applications.
Videos we already have.
Stephen Jepson's Traditional Techniques with Tom Shafer
Lana Wilson's Soft Slabs
Virginia Cartwright's 2

I like the Gordon Hutchens raku video. I think it covers more than the
Romberg video. I believe the Hutchens video also comes with some recipes. I know
his video on soda firing has body, slip and glaze recipes with it.
The Hopper video series are all very good, but I'm not sure you'll actually
see him glazing. The decorating ones are excellent.
I think the Jepson video on glazing is a good beginner one. It shows batching
a glaze, mixing and applying the glazes.
Watch the re-run on the DIY cable network on Bill Van Gilders pottery making.
It's on this week as well, and will probably be running again in another week
or more. He covers glazing and gives glaze recipes which are available on the
DIY web site.
Also, you might consider joining the American Ceramic Society California
chapter. For twenty dollars a year you get their newletter and can rent their
videos for just the cost of mailing. You can get to watch a lot of videos and
decide which ones you want to buy for the studio. It's a great deal. I think they
have well over 80 videos last time I looked. You can also find a list of their
video titles on their web site.
I know they have the Robin Hopper series,as well as the Gordon Hutchens,
Virginia Cartwright, Lana Wilson, Cardew, Soldner, Jepson,Warren Mackenzie,
etc.etc.
Good luck!

Graham Sheehan's Beginning to Glaze and Fire video is great (produced by
Tara Productions, available from just about any Ceramic Supplier that
carries videos) Other than that, I'd call Steve Branfman at the Potter's
Shop in Massachusetts and ask him. I know of no better person to provide
advice about pottery books or videos!
