200 firings

Dear Mel;

I have to agree with you. I have been considering the purchase of a
high temperature electric kiln, and it is dismaying to find that ITCing
the elements or kiln surfaces will void the warranty.

However, I am pleased to report that the Doorless Fiberkiln, though not
treated with ITC, I built for the Shadbolt Arts Center in Burnaby BC
has reached its 1000th firing in eighteen years, with one minor repair
twelve years ago. I will re-line this kiln in 2005 and expect it to go
another 1000 fires. These were all firings to Cone 10 in reduction.
Total costs of equipment, fuel, repairs, and furniture were
$34,000.........for an astonishing $34 per C10 firing.

Just couldn't resist a tiny brag here,

i would agree with charles...200 with half at
cone 6 is damn good.

if you just bisque fire in a kiln, one could talk
about a thousand firings...but cone 6 and above
kicks the beee/jezz out of a kiln.

if you would itc a new kiln, get things nice and
tight/totally clean connections....i might use the idea of a thousand firings.

we think that the gas electric /kiln...with coils
sprayed with itc 213, a fine/consistent coating of itc 100
and fired to cone 10 on a regular basis may
last a long, long time.
but then some companies pooh pooh anything
they did not invent.

In my kiln log, I got 240 firings of bisque and Cone 6 (earliest went to cone 8) before the kiln needed new elements. It started to take longer and longer to get up to temp. It is a small Olympic and with Mel's hints at the time on ITC and a new set of elements, that same kiln is working better than it ever did. Toni Smith in Ohio
