Today during a bisque firing my Orton kiln vent gave up the ghost. It
has been slowing down for about a month now, but today, after almost 10
years of use, I couldn't even jump start it.
So for almost 10 years I have been firing with this
under-the-kiln-vent. My quandary is this: the good people at Orton can
send me new parts tomorrow, but I won't receive them until next week.
I have orders that are due Monday....I don't mind firing a bisque
without the vent (the room where the kiln is is very well vented) but
in terms of a cone 6 glaze firing - my experience is that the kiln vent
evened out the firing, and my fire down schedule is based on having a
vent going. Maybe none of this will make a difference? Should I just
go for it and get the orders done, or should I wait until the parts
arrive?
Thoughts?

Jon,
WAIT FOR THE PARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never mess around with ORDERS. Your
customer will understand an equipment malfunction delay of a few days.

Well, it's choice-less now. Last night the receptacle that my kiln
plugs into shorted out, leaving a nice smokey trail up the wall, so
can't do anything til that gets fixed. Darn. Rains.....pours....

I'd go over that kiln with a fine tooth comb, perhaps the vent and the plug
are SYMPTOMS of a larger problem...........

Might be a good time to switch from the plug-in to hard wire the kiln
and install a disconnect at the kiln site.

Probably just as well...honest
you were meant to wait til that kiln was fixed
before firing it.
by the way, Mike Collins from Laurel is a terrific repair guy,
who is super reasonable with his prices.
(He used to work for Eagle/cutter in Rockville and do their repairs)

best of luck!
