In response to the posting by Mark and Sylvia Mondloch regarding their
Axner Oxyprobe.

The pure platinum wire running on the outside of the Oxyprobe does in fact
get brittle from repetitive heating and cooling in a reduction
atmosphere. If there is still enough good wire left on the probe it can be
patched by using a small acetylene torch (propane will not get hot enough)
and welding a new piece of wire to the existing piece. In addition the
pieces could simply be twisted together rather than welded and that either
way would produce accurate results.
The wire is normally more brittle towards the tip of the
sensor. Therefore you will most likely need to start by wrapping the new
wire around the tip then proceed to intertwine the new wire with whatever
existing wire is still good. It is advised to test the existing wire by
twisting it back and forth with a pair of needle nose pliers. I have in
fact used this method for our probe in the studio and it performs as well
as it did prior to the break.
Axner Company does in fact sell the pure platinum needed for
this project, the price is $7.95 per inch.
