Hey Mel-
Its a beauty!!! Congrats! And here's my chance to make Mel blush! Last =
summer (or was it the summer before?) at the La Crosse conference I arriv=
ed after 36 hours of no sleep (not a happy thing when one is over 50), wi=
th a rental car to return, and feeling very lost. Our dear mayor Mel jum=
ped up and gave me a famous Mel bear hug and led the way to the airport t=
o drop off the car! I was stunned.
Not too long ago (again, my aging brain may be playing tricks) Mel came t=
o Greenbelt, MD to lead a workshop. I came in late to his slide show, we=
nt right up to him and gave him a big hug and smacky kiss on the cheek. =
Now being kissed in the semi-darkness by a beautiful woman (I'm not alway=
s modest!) in front of a bunch of people-the look on his face!!! Cool, c=
ollected Mel-NOT! =20
Take care Mel,
smooches,
Karin A from Maryland

Gorgeous pot, but what do you mean by "chinese glazes"?

That's a beauty. Is it an iron and boneash glaze?

Mel, I think your glaze relates to Kay Fudeya's pot on his show
announcement (I put it up here:
http://public.fotki.com/togeika/jajpots/kay.html )

Kay uses a glazing technique his grandfather uses: Kay used iron
pigment.. (While I was there, he only used it with copper and gosu (
impure cobalt.) It is done with feldspathic clear glaze. First,
clear is brushed on the pot. Then a layer of pigment: iron, copper
or gosu. Then, you brush clear over it again. I like this
technique best when the top coat of clear is thin in places and you get
the oxide breaking through and looking metallic. It is especially
nice with copper.

Kay got me testing this with iron, copper and gosu. I'm at
around 100 tests currently and am going out to do a few more. Looking
at your pot, I am thinking about adding some boneash to the iron.
Also, I just thought of a test I have wanted to do: adding bone ash
to Mashiko Kaki. Some of Hamada's kakis are very red. I am guessing
he may have added bone ash to his kaki stone.
