Skutt also has upgrade thermocouple for $200.00. You also have to send your
controller off to be upgraded if you use these. Kiln tech says they last
forever and anything that is promised to last forever sounds wonderful.
Anyone out there have experience with the $200.00 ones?
Forever is a long time.
---------------

You are referring to the S-type thermocouple. In my opinion, this is the
only way to go if you fire regularly to cone 6. The S-type lasts a long,
long time with no appreciable temperature drift. When the S-type fails, it
is normally due to breakage from getting bumped inside the kiln rather from
wear.

The price of an S-type thermocouple varies depending on the gauge of the
thermocouple and the supplier.

Before installating the S-type, call your kiln supplier to find out what the
upgrade will entail. You will need a different type of thermocouple lead
wire, and the controller may need to be changed.

Paragon DTC 100, 600, 800, and 1000 controllers are not designed for the
S-type thermocouple. All Paragon Sentry 12-key controllers accept the
S-type. It is important, however, that you select the S-type with the
Options key. Otherwise the temperature will be way off.
