I think you are referring to a barrel-type element connector with a screw on
each end. (One screw holds the lead wire; the other holds the element.)
Pointers on using this type of element connector:

Use the brass screw to hold the lead wire and the stainless steel screw to
hold the element. The screws must be tight. The element will fail if its
screw is not tight enough. Also, if for some reason the threads strip out
when you are tightening the element screw, discard the element connector and
use a new one.

When changing elements, discard the barrel-type element connectors. Use new
ones with the new element.
