congratulations on your first effort at replacing elements...well done.
i also have a 1227..i vacuum out the channels after removing the
elements and then again after installing the new ones...brick bits are
not like glaze bits which will melt and burn out an element.

also, instead of crimping which can be difficult to do properly...you
can also get some copper connectors that have a screw. i love
them...just thread in the pigtail and the wire and screw it down..easy
to tell if it's tight and really easy to remove the next time you have
to replace elements so that you're not continually having to cut off
your jumper wire if you can't remove the crimp connector.

holler if you have any questions, sadly enough (although good) i've
replaced almost every single electrical component of my kiln in the last
three years.
