spraying underglazes

My mom has been air brushing her pieces with Amaco's Velvet Underglazes.
She's used them for years for brush work, so we just re-noticed that the
lable states "Not for spray applications" I wondered if anyone knew the
specific reason? Is it a dust/particle issue? I thought with all the non
toxic lables that perhaps they would just rather say don't spray. If so than
with proper precautions, mask and spraybooth are they safe to spray??

Hmm. I looked in the AMACO catalog and all the velvets are marked as
safe for spray application. I went to my shelves and checked a few of
them and couldn't find anywhere were it said they were not safe for
spraying. Is it possible that you got some of the sunstroke series
mixed up with the velvets? Sunstrokes have a pink label while Velvets
are green. If it is indeed a velvet, which color was it? And where on
the label was it written?

Sarah,
I'm kind of a freak and keep all my old AMACO catalogs, so I went back
to the 1999 copy and looked at the velvets. Only a handful were marked
safe for spray application (Medium Brown was not one of them marked as
safe) The first time they were all marked as safe was in the 2002
catalog. I spoke to Lori Jenkins, Product Safety Coordinator at AMACO,
and she informed me that the standard for safe spray application changed
in 2002. The formula is the same as it had been in 1999. So, your
bottle, even though marked not safe for spray application, IS safe, as
long as you use proper respiration and venting equipment. I hope that
helps!
