I am heading to B.C. with the kids on Thursday to visit my dad for 2 weeks
in Naniamo. Any ideas of what to see pottery wise out there?
I was sent a list quite some time ago by someone on Clayart - sorry I'm not
good with remembering names! and I can't find the original e-mail in my
saves file, I must have dumped it by mistake.
Can you re-send or anyone for that matter??
Thanks a bunch and I'll be signing off Clayart as of Wednesday night (don't
want to come home to a full mailbox!)

I am having to forego a family trip to the San Juan Islands next
week as I have "volunteered" to care for my mom's very ill cat while
she goes. It's almost sounding like we could have had a mini-Clayart
convention on Vancouver Island! I am going to aim for next July/Aug.
and maybe run into some of you along the way - we always drive up
through Oregon and Washington on I-5 to Anacortes and take the ferry to
Sidney. Oh how I wish I could go this year! Thanks to Clayart I now
know of "interesting to potters" places to stop along the way.

Hi,
If you're arriving in Naniamo via the BC Ferries then you can grab a
brochure called A Guide to Artists and Studios for the Parksville and
Qualicum District. This brochure covers quite a number of potters and gives
a brief outline on each one. By the way, Parksville is just a little north
of Naniamo which you probably know.
Enjoy your stay..

Gabriola Island is right by Nanaimo - 20 minute ferry ride. Graham Sheehan
has his home studio there - Sunstone Pottery. There are other potters on
Gabriola as well. Go a little further north from Nanaimo and you can go to
Denman Island to visit Gordon Hutchens. You'll find an oasis of artists on
the islands!

Penni,
Denman Island - There are a number of pottery studios open here. Gordon
Hutchens is open daily except Sunday. Bentley Lebaron, Beardsley
Pottery, Tom Dennis are open daily, as well as others. Too bad I will be
away for the next 3 weeks and my studio will be closed, would have loved
to meet you and show you around. Get a brochure for Denman and Hornby
Islands, either on the ferry to Vancouver Island or at the Buckley Bay
ferry booth.
Hornby Island - Wayne Ngan has a fabulous studio and wood fire kiln.
There are other studios as well. Don't go on the weekend or you will
spend most of your time in the ferry lineups. If you try to do both
islands in one day start very early. It is difficult to enjoy them both.
Hornby has beautiful beaches and great ocean swimming!
Courtenay - If you get a chance to get here there is a great pottery
co-op store called The Potters Place, with work from about 30 potters.
Great selection! Also the Comox Valley Art Gallery. Stop at the Tourist
Info on the way in for directions.
Quadra Island - Lots of studios here as well but a little further north.
Nanaimo - The Tozan kiln is being loaded Aug 5 so I guess you will be
gone before then. In order to see it you would have to get someone to
show you. Go to the website www.tozan.bc.ca.
Coombs/Parksville - There are a number of studios in this area. Maybe
Les Crimp will chime in with specifics. Also the Arrowsmith Potters
Guild which has a website.
This Studio Tour includes Robin Hopper and Judi Dyell's Studios but you
may be gone by then. Their studio is open daily as well and some of the
others may be too.

Well this should give you more than enough. Hope the next time you visit
I will be around. Enjoy your holiday!
Janet, off for the final day of packing, kiln unloading and running
around like ... well you know, looking forward to a leisurely holiday
down the coast!!!

When in Nanaimo, go to the Pyromania Pottery Studio in Coombs (see the Old
Country Market with the Goats on the Roof). This is a co-op of 6 local
potters and is definitely worth seeing.
Les.
