The big blue osara are a signature piece. For New Year's at my
Sensei's workshop, there is a big dinner like we usually had after a
noborigama firing. After dinner, there is a lottery. Before
dinner, we follow Sensei around, while he picks out about 25 or 30 pots
that will be our New Year's gift. At my second New Year, I pulled
the number 2 out of the wooden box. My teacher's grand daughter
pulled out number 1. The grand daughter's present that year was a
large blue salt glazed platter for the number 1. I got a little
copper red guinomi. Sensei laughed when I picked up my guinomi. He
too thought it was amusing that the littlest person got the biggest
piece and the biggest person got the smallest piece.
My favorite color is blue. I like the look and smell
of natural indigo. My favorite pottery blues are Sung Chun blues and
Nezumi shinos. I've never used cobalt until recently. The cobalt I
am using is gosu: impure cobalt that has a lot of iron in it.
