Hello.
I'm trying to obtain a Helmar flashing slip/clay formula for use in Mass
Coll. of Art's Soda-fire kiln. I came across Holly and John's listserve
messages, and hoped you (or anybody in list) may be able to help me. Many
Thanks.

James,
Be sure to contact Sheffield Pottery Supply as they are the dealer for
HELMER in your area. I write HELMER in shout format to remind
everyone... Helmar is not the name of this clay.
Take the mine tour to see how it gets its name at:

click on the mine tour button or
use the link below:

Generally you can use Helmer in place of all the ball clay and Kaolin in
your favorite recipe as long as you flux it enough to get the needed
flashing which is induced by Nepheline Syenite.
Helmer bodies above 50% clay have large drying shrinkages and are harder to
get to the dry state without cracking.
I make a series of bodies as follows"
38 special which is 38% Helmer, balance fluxes and silica
50 porcelain which is the Alfred recipe using Helmer as the only clay
60 large body which can be made into huge pieces easily
70 woodfire which is the 70 Helmer:30 Nepheline Syenite mix. It throws like
magic.
Good Luck
