wax resist over glaze

I'm new to this forum and I have been appreciating the great
information and discussion. I have a small problem I wonder if
someone could help me with.

I use a commercial wax resist to wax over applied glaze on a pot to aid
in keeping further glaze applications off the first coat, such as the
rim on the inside. I have had no problem with the wax peeling off as
it dries, taking the underlying glaze off with it. I have applied
the wax when the glaze is just dry enough to handle and when it is bone
dry.

However, I have had some students who have tried the same thing, as
well as another potter I know and they have had significant problems
with the wax lifting off as it dried, ruining the glaze under it. In
one case the glaze used was one that I used with great results. The
only difference I can see between their application and mine is the use
of different clay bodies. Could that be their problem? Could it be
related to their having thinned the wax resist with water( not sure
they are thinning it, just looking for reasons)

Thanks much for you insights!
