I find this conversation about double glazing very interesting. When I
studied at Cranbrook in 1951, Maija Grotell was the master at this type of
glazing. Her very famous pots showed her control and from this exposure, I
also learned about the process. Her theory was to use a glaze that melted
before the top glaze, so that there would be a bubbling reaction. The
bottle on my Gallery page I used a Cornwall stone glaze as well as one
containing Albany Slip. The two birds shown upper right were also double
glazed. I continue to double glaze only my sculptural pieces now. I think
the new glazes a number of you are experimenting with sounds great. At
least it gives each potter his/her own look to their work.
