My sense of the process of working is that
we are engaged in the task of making our
imagination visable....we try to articulate our
ideas into three dimensional form.
The task is riddled with challenges....
some of those challenges are simply an
audience that responds to our efforts.
Two defenses come to mind...
1. Some people are going to be more talented
than you can ever dream of being....and others
will be less capable....skilled....talented...
and....oh...well...
2. The other thought that comes to mind is the
defense that Bill Murray's character in the
movie "Meat Balls" gave to his young soccer
team on the eve of a crushing game....a
game in which all of the team members could
expect total destruction...It is the spirit that
should guide one's work...In the pursuit of
one's goals...when it comes to the evaluation
of the work...the mantra should be....
that when on views the judgemental response....
"It just doesn't matter...." fill in the appropriate
noun that is giving one grief...

So...the things that do matter...in a world that
seems more complex...is perhaps to ask of oneself
what you want out of the activity of working with
clay...What does the inanimate material clay and
all of the ancillary qualities that are the baggage
that comes with the activity supposed to provide...or simply
pay off? So there are a range of questions one could
ask....does one want fame...security....excitement...
challenges....
I think for each of the questions...one needs to
respond with the appropriate acts to develop the
payoff....if one wants fame then you need to spend
a significant amount of time promoting yourself...
given you have also invested the time to develop
something of interest to promote...then it is often
random luck that will aid in the development of fame...
Determination is good...
Asking good questions in one's work helps...
Doing something innovative...skillful...thoughtful...
perhaps something that is unnerving....so it's gets
the attention of the powers that be....
I am happy with the act of making...the dialogue
that propels my work...with the historical trail of
results that pile up....and a clear sense that the clay
will keep me honest....it will give me rewards for
my efforts...knock me on my a** when I am not
paying attention...
The pure joy of surprises that I provide myself
is as good as it gets......simple pleasures...
