I plan to install a small updraft sectional kiln in an all metal
shed. I contacted the folks at Olympic, it's their updaft, to see
what a overhead, swing-away vent hood/stack would cost.
The quote for stainless steel hood & stainless insulated stack pipe
would run $1300 plus $200 shipping. This would be about twice what I
paid for the kiln (bought it used)!
Since Olympic claims (can't remember where I read this) the temp
above the kiln only gets to a few hundred degrees, I'm thinking the
vent system they offer is a bit overkill for my situation and I
should be able to build or have built a galvanized hood & stack.
Anybody done this or have any specific recommendations?
Thanks, Bill

We have a sheet metal shop in town here (probably several, but at least one
that I know of) that could easily fabricate a hood for a kiln. If it is
cheap enough, even the galvanized should be fine, even if it doesn't last as
long. The hoods at my college were galvanized, they lasted for ever, and
were only a couple of feet above the updraft kilns.

I had an eight foot square hood and stack made for me ten years ago. It
is galvanized sheet metal. I had it done by a guy who used to work in
University of Michigan's heating and and cooling department. It cost
$350 at that time and is a work of art.
I'd suggest you find someone who does sheet metal fabrication and ask
them to make one for you. If you live anywhere near Ann Arbor, MI I
could give you the guy's name. He was great in helping me get the proper
size exhaust blower and fitting it to the hood. I'm sure he could make
you are really good, efficient system at a reasonable price.

Dear Bill,
I don't know if this is obtainable where you are, but I made a very
effective *hood* for my in-workshop updraught gas kiln out of stainless
steel flue liner, commonly available here in the UK and pretty darned
cheap. It's designed use is for lining the chimneys of older houses that
have been converted to gas, oil, or solid fuel based central heating. It
is thin walled and flexible as it is generally pushed up the existing
flue from the ground floor, so I added a home made collector to the end
of it, bent the liner to the required shape to go through a hole in the
wall (or window) and hung it by one wire from the ceiling. Removing it
for packing or unpacking took less than 30 seconds.
Incidentally I used to own an Olympic 7 cube gas Kiln and found I could
pass my hand over the flue during firing provided it was no less than 3
feet above it!
