Flint is not all quartz - there is some CaO in it.

Quartz - almost pure SiO2

Quartz is a crystalline form of SiO2- so is Cristobalite and so is
Tridimite - amorphous silica is a non-crystalline form of SiO2.

Hamer has ten pages on SiO2 - it is an important oxide for us potters - the
more we know about it the easier it will be to solve problems attributed to
it's different forms.

It was and is water ground because dry grinding flint pebbles to make a
fine material usable for clays and glazes used to give workers silicosis -
the water keeps the dust down.

Here in North America the quartz is mined and crushed - a by product of
these mines is Kaolin. Because modern machinery is so efficient - the
silica we get here usually has a large amount of micro fine particles - it
is why not breathing it is recommended.

So in the words of Tom Lehrer: *Don't drink the water and don't breathe
the air!*

More true now than ever - an interesting story from a relative who is
teaching dentistry.

He is noticing an increase in tooth decay in children in Toronto - a large
Canadian City - he figured it out - because so many are now drinking
bottled water - which is not fluorinated - they are not getting the
protection they used to when drinking city water.

Dear Ron Roy,
This is a Global phenomenon in Western societies.
No doubt exacerbated by the high raw carbohydrate load in junk food
and high acid levels in of dark hued universal supermarket beverages.
Another problem for people with a reaction to high sodium load are the
salts in "Mineral Spring Water". Pushes up Blood pressure.Going to
cause a lot of problems for geriatric folk.
Pays to read the labels.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
