ot automatic opening of files via web page

Just one caution there... Or more a thought on not antagonising
some users.

Not everyone is enamoured by "automatic" opening of any old file
in a secondary programme, when they click on a hyperlink, beit
symbol or text. And some users get very cross indeed, when
something is not recognisable as such... For example, it is OK if
clearly labelled "CLICK HERE to open/download EXCEL SPREADSHEET",
but not if a potentially hazardous (i.e. virus infected) file is
disguised behind a word or symbol hyperlink.

It is a fact of life that M$ files can contain Nasties thanks to
their "macro" technology! :o)For this reason, I have set up both
my browsers (I use anything but Internet Explorer for this very
reason) specifically not to open files in other programmes such
as word, excel, etc. Then, if I am offered an M$ spreadsheet (for
example) I can decide to open it or not.

It could be all those safe sex campaigns which have made me
paranoid at the very threat of infection, but I have learned to
be "better safe than sorry" where the internet is concerned.

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser
