I'll be in Cologne on business from 9/25 to 10/3. Does anyone know of
potteries/museums/other must-see places in the vicinity that I should visit?
I'm also hoping to go to Heidelberg for a day; any suggestions for special
spots around there?
Thanks!

I go to Koln a couple times a year on business. The "DOME" Catherdral is
a must see! Be sure to walk to the top...it's like 300 steps. River excu=
rision
on the Rhine is also nice. Have a nice trip.

I used to visit Cologne frequently. The Roemisch-Germanisch Museum is wonderful. (It was finished in about 1974.) It houses a wonderful and extensive collection of artifacts from the time of the Roman Empire and is not to be missed, in my opinion. The museum is right next to the Cathedral.
Also, and you might verify before making this excursion, there was a very wonderful Faience Museum in Duesseldorf, about 30 miles north of Cologne on the Rhine.
There are many very old and interesting churches within walking distance of the cathedral. The presence of so much "history" is mind-boggling for us infant North Americans.

I would say that the pottery center of Hohr-Grenz-Hausen and
Kannenbakkerland would be nice. Hundreds of potters. A very nice museum
of Salt Glaze. Some old wood fired salt kilns. When I worked there in
the late 60's and early 70's they still fired them, when I went back in
the 90's it was all gas firing. Great salt glaze!!!

Hi Kathy,
the first thing I would suggest is a little museum called "Keramion" at
Frechen (a little village near by cologne - www.keramion.de). At cologne the
"Museum für angewandte Kunst" and also very interessting the "Hetjens
Museum" in Düsseldorf, which has a huge collection of ancient and
contemporary pottery.
If you need some help - contact me.
Best greeting from cologne
