Why hassle centering large amounts of clay. Skip the muscle building
and back wrenching.
Use coil throwing.
The reason 20 gallon crocks are not so common is not because there was
no need.
Its because in the historic U.S. we did not have a good coil throwing
technique and twenty gallons worth of clay was too hard to easily
center and raise.

There are many ways to learn coil throwing. One is to buy the video I
produced on Thai Pottery and watch carefully. There is good video with
closeups in two distinct traditions. You'll need pot part to the video
Dankwean and Beyond Dankwean. They are available from the Archie Bray
Foundation 1(800) 443-6434. another is to go work with a Thai Potter.
Daniel Johnson, a Mark Hewitt apprentice did this. Better skill for a
potter than welding, but welding is so useful. Nothing like being able
to stick steel together.

Normal disclaimer. The Bray owns the VHS rights until 2015 when they
revert to me. I do not yet have DVD out and don't have one in the
works. All the proceeds from the video support the residency program at
the Bray.
