casting slip for raku fired ware

I am keen to develop/buy a casting body that would be suitable for Raku
fired ware (approx 15" diameter). I had thought that I might use a grogged
body like T or Y material in conjunction with a stoneware but was advised
not to do so because the grog would settle during casting thus resulting in
an uneven density.

Does anyone have any experience of this or any comments as to an appropriate
body? I am based in the UK.

I look forward to hearing from you!!!!!!

Elly.

I have recently posted this question to this group, you may want to look at
the responses in the archives. Everyone had very good advice. I have just
started doing slip ware raku myself and have found that it is more the
uneven heating of the clay going into the hot kiln (i.e. hot kiln shelf, and
cool, or warm pot bottom) that ends up breaking most of my slipped, thrown,
or hand built stuff. The slip ware that a friend of mine was giving me was,
to my surprise just a basic low fire ^06 - ^1 body! I think this was
getting too close to vitrification which was also a major cause of cracking.
If I get this stuff too hot it does tend to crack if I leave it to cool in
the air, in reduction it does a lot better because of a little more
controlled drop in temperature. I have been getting good results with this
lately even when doing horse hair raku on it, however I am going to go to a
high fire stoneware slip body next ^ 6 or ^10 and I believe this will solve
most of my current problems with breakage. Some of the books I have address
slip ware as being a good raku body of clay that undergoes the thermal shock
well. So, put cool bricks or broken clay shards into the kiln each time you
put a new set of pots in and set the pots on them and see if that helps.

best of luck (with raku we all need all we can get!),

Corey

Hi Elly;

I saw in the book 'The Complete Practical Potter' that Kate Schuricht
slipcast her raku vessels. In the book, she uses earthenware casting slip
and added 15-25% molochite grog [80s/120s] to the slip, stir well and sieve
the mix before use.

Hope this help
