Hi Julie,

If you do not mind 'xerox' , and do not need vary many, just
do them yourself at either 'kinkos' or some Office Supply
Place as has 'xerox' machines you may use.

If you need many hundreds, and are not too critical of
quality, see the kinds of printers as do bulk fliers,
broadsides and coupon-books and so on.

Otherwise, go and talk with various smaller Printing
establishments in your area, and find out how they like to
work, or if they will work with you to jave your project
turn out the way you want it.

Buying your own Paper and Cover Stock from a Paper
wholesaler can help save a lot from letting the Printer
supply it or sell it to you...

Now-a-days, many Printers are prefering the copy be on a
computer file, but all my experience was with drawing
everything at my desk and or making paste-ups, having it
shot with a Process Camera, taking the Negatives to the
Printer with a 'dummy' Catalogue I had made to scale, which
represented the pagination and size of the Catalogue and so
on...and getting my 'parent-sheet' Paper and Cover Stock
from a wholesaler.

Find some friendly Printers...see what they can suggest..

Have any of you had catalogs printed? Any suggestions on the least
expensive option? I have one worked out to front and back of two 8 1/2
x 11 sheets, but Kinko's has given me a price quote of almost $5.00 each
for printing. There must be a better way.

If you can print 2500-5000 copies, Pl3X in Florida is incredibly cheap. =
8 pages for about $2000 double sided; they don't really consider two =
double sided sheets a catalog. http://www.pl3x.com =
is their web site. (I'm just getting these numbers off their web site. I =
don't work for them and I'm only a customer... I printed business cards =
with them for about $0.03/each for full color including shipping.

For four pages, pick a "flyer" layout with 11x17 120lb glossy cover =
size. You'll have to print 5000 copies, but the cost is about $1300. =
They can send you less than 5000 copies, but the only price difference =
will be in shipping. I assume they will score and fold for you, but you =
might need to call and ask rather than using their online job submission =
tool.

The only caveat with Pl3x is that they gang-run jobs and so they don't =
have a system to send you proofs of color. I've never heard of major =
problems but you should try a few color laser copies at Kinkos to get a =
feeling for what the color will look like and realize there can be =
slight variation with what Pl3x will produce.

If you're printing small quantities at Kinko's, they'll just use their =
color photocopier. That'll run about $4 per 2-page double-sided copy, =
and stapling or folding will be extra. Kinko's is one of the most =
expensive ways to do offset press too; they are mainly winners in the =
"convenience" war.

Thanks, Phil. Since I posted my note I found out that the tiny local
newspaper does some printing jobs on the side. They've given me a much
better price, but I'm still interested in ideas from the group.
