waxing platters

I hot wax for smaller things and pieces without a foot ring, but for
platters and bowls I use liquid wax. The secret for me is to combine two
types together. One is the old sort of oily thick stuff that will
separate and have a brown liquid on the bottom. The other is called
Forbes Wax. I buy it at Highwater. It has a little bit of a translucent
feel and is much thinner. I mix them 50/50 and use a 1" foam brush to
apply.
I had been getting frusturated with it lately, but then I realized that
I had been forgetting to stir it up before using it. I also added a few
drops of food coloring this week so that I could see it.

In Western North Carolina hundreds of miles from any coast line, and
there isn't a battery to be found anywhere in town today. We got
anywhere from 12-20 inches from Frances and the newspaper says only 3-4
inches of rain will bring the rivers back to flood stage. The forcast is
for 8-12".

As for me, I know that my driveway will be washed away and that our
creek will be too high to cross. We're going to park a car down the
drive, and hope that the state road holds. (One lane is already gone).
My husband is on his way home with a batch of movies, as long as the
power holds out we'll be settled in making pots and relaxing. Not much
different from a snow storm for us except we're not having to worry
about having dry wood.

Hang on everyone!
