Oh, Sam, this is PERFECT.

But my question about #25--Last, but certainly not least instruction; try
not to attack the foolish person who innocently asks "Why does this mug cost
so much?"

is generally WHY DOES IT COST SO LITTLE?!?! Nothing like getting into
the craft to learn a deep and abiding respect!

Over this past weekend there were two potters at the event--me, who hand
builds, and Lisa Crews, who is a marvelous wheel potter (though she also
hand builds Native-style work.) So we both had inkwells for sale, hers for
$6--they took her under 5 minutes wheel time--and mine for twice that, or
more--they take me closer to 45 minutes. Hm. Try explaining that to
someone who just wants an inkwell.

Best--
Kate

Hi Sam,
I'm guessing Melbourne, Ontario is a very humid, damp place?? #9 - 1-5
hrs to dry a pulled handle enough to attach, in " How To Make A Mug "
seems like a long period of time! In sunny, warm Walnut Creek, Ca. I
attach it as soon as I pull it. Mike Gordon

You got it in one! We run a dehumifier about 9 months of the year. The
other 3 months the woodstove is on, and it's too dry.

The type of handle I put on my leaf mug (see my gallery page) requires the
handle to be quite hard leather hard or it droops. The handle is a pulled
handle looped completely on itself - shaped oval. A picture is worth a
thousand words in this case :-(

Go here http://www.ody.ca/~scuttell/gallery.htm and look at the mug.

Ya Sam,
Just roughly calculated #1-25. That's about 290 hours. At $20-$65/hr.
shouldn't we reflect that in our prices? I do like the idea of making
production reports. The annodizing plant I worked for in Kalamazoo
modernized in the late '80's and started doing accurate reports with
each worker recording what they did and how long. They also instituted
ISO 9002. You should have seen the temps. all in a frenzy. Supprising
hwo many people can't count. The company had been running on by guess
and by gosh since WWI when the made "Trench Lighters" and still stayed
in buisness.
I had a thought last time I worked clay that if I could make an average
of 3 dozen cups a day for 9 months I'd have a wholesale inventory of
$72,900 (US) and retail $145,800. Needless to say I don't have that kind
of dicipline but it is a fantisy to shoot for.
So how ya comming on refining your wood kiln design? Got more brick yet?

Hi, Kate,
please elaborate on the inkwells--I'm amazed that anyone is
interested in buying one. Do people actually use ink these days? If
you have any picts, please include.

Just surfacing after an on-going bout with the flu.
