hi fire porcelain - rr needs some help.

Hello everyone,

I need to see some recipies - or molecular formulas, or % weights for
porcelain that will fire to cone 1450C.

That means at least cone 16 - I don't know what the rate of firing will be
so that may not even be the right cone - but it will give me a good
starting point.

Can anyone tell me where to look?

Thanks a lot!

The highest body Chappell listed was Cone12-14 (#PT-19, page 91 of
current edition if you're interested). I also checked Tichane's Clay
Bodies. He lists one at Cone 15 which he calls "Electrical Porcelain"
it's on page 281. In case you don't have the book:
Ball Clay 50%
Feldspar 20%
Talc 5%
Alumina 20%
Grog 5%
Not sure how it's a porcelain though, there's no Kaolin in it! He also
has several other recipes that don't list cone numbers, so I'm not sure
what they would be. There is a lot of good info in that book. If you
don't have it, you might want to get it. It's pretty cheap (About
$16.00). I have 1 in stock, but Steve Branfman probably has it also and
you're a lot closer geographically to him than to me I think.
BTW I'm still trying to get an analysis on that Macaloid. One of these
days I'll get someone on the phone with a clue ;-)

Ron:
In the "Clay" section of the Revised Edition (1973)
of Daniel Rhodes' "Clay and Glazes for the Potter" is listed a
recipe for porcelain for at least cone 12-14:
30 Georgia Kaolin
15 Florida Kaolin
15 English Ball clay
20 Feldspar
20 Flint

Of course, the various types of 'spars and kaolins leaves a lot to
the imagination, and the temp range of
cones varies according to manufacturer :>(, but he does mention in
the text that "...a body designed for firing at cone 14 will have a
good deal less feldspar than one designed for cone 9..." he also
mentions the fact that English ball clay is best for porcelain since
it "is highly plastic and relatively iron-free", and says basically
the same about the Georgia kaolin.

Too, it appears from his "recipes" that in order to flux at a higher
temperature, one reduces the feldspar, and he mentions that if the
flint increases beyond 25 %, dunting can result.

If you like, I would be happy to scan and e-mail you the pertinent
text(s) from that book...your choice of file format.

You might also check with various "ovenware" and "flameware" bodies.
You may just find the information you need there. Rhodes seems to
prefer stoneware bodies for those, though.

I hope that helps,

Ron,
I have occasionally overfired my Helmer body.
I fell asleep during a late night session and woke
up 6 hours later than cone 10. 11 was a pool and
all the shelves had bowed down, stopping only
when they settled onto the taller pots on the
shelves below.
Recipe:
Helmer 125
Custer Spar 75
Neph Sye 25
Silica 75
No ball clay is needed for this body.
It fires modestly white. David Waln
adds a little cobalt carbonate ball
milled very fine to blue the body and
make it appear whiter. I like the warm
color and it does become somewhat
translucent at this range when thin.

Hi Ron,

Would the composition of Seger cones give you a reference point? The
Collected Writings of Hermann A. Seger, pages 242-245 gives the
compositions from cone 1 up to cone 36. Wouldn't a cone that melted at,
say, cone 18 (0.3 K2O, 0.7 CaO, 3.1 Al2O3, 31 SiO2) make a well
vitrified body at cone 16? I checked the cone 14 "Typical German
Porcelain" body in Rhodes and it is very similar to the Seger cone 15
cone composition except for alumina level (lower in the cone
composition). Just a thought.
