I'm presently building a kiln. I plan to use Propane even though those who
began the project planned to use vegtable oil and waste cooking oil. We are
low on funds and kiln bricks. I've built an Anagoma wood firing kiln using
self firing brick and thought this project could utilize the same
resourcefulness. I need a strong refractory recipe, which both insulates
and remaines strucurally worthy under high temp. I would like the kiln to
acheive cone 10 or 11 if necessary. Also a castable refractory material
recipe would be helpful. Thank You.

Lawrence, here is link to three articles in an issue of Studio Potter
that deal with castables.http://www.studiopotter.org/articles/art0015.htm
If you can get your hands on an old copy of Jack Troy's book on salt
fired ceramics he explains what he did and experimented with and used
home made castable which he rammed into catenary arch construction type
kiln back in the early 70's.
Hope this helps
