I'm not Howard, but I'll respond anyway. Controllers with boards
pressed by Dave Bartlett (and possibly other manufacturers as well) are
capable of having the thermocouples offset. (Usually 1 - 1 1/2
cones) For instance, L&L programs an offset at the factory to
compensate for their protection tubes. (This is why the display reads
100 degrees at room temperature) Interfacing the offset is not usually
easy and the menus are hidden. In this case, Mark has a Skutt and if he
wanted to have the thermocouples off-set, Dave could walk him through
that. (Ron, you're welcome to call Dave as well. I'm sure he'd be
happy to walk you through how to off-set as well) In a more general
situation, if someone wanted to off-set their thermocouples, they should
call their local kiln repair tech, or, failing that, call the kiln
manufacturer.
Also, while we're on the subject of thermocouples, Dave would like
me to mention that pyrometers using type K thermos are calibrated at a
specific temperature. I'm sure that there is an algorithm on electronic
boards to compensate for the difference in microvolts and thereby make
the accuracy range broader, however manual pyrometers do not have this
algorithm and will be less accurate at temperatures further away from
this point.
