Phil,

I had the feeling you were 'squinting' the whole time we were talking the
other day. I just let you go just because I thought your eyes needed a rest.
Hell had I know that we could of went for hours...

Cheers,
Rod

I allways just 'squinted'...(I squint anyway, so, you know,
it was no hardship or anything to do...)

it is a snap to make one.

step one.
get an old football helmet from your
local charity sale. i like medium size. make sure you
can find a green one...nature.

step two.
cut a welding helmet in half big scissors/
duct tape it to the front of the
football helmet (take off nose guard.)

step three.
to the top of the helmet add a small compressor.
duct tape will do.
add a rubber hose that will attach to the compressor
and come out the front of the helmet drill a 4/11 th inch hole
in your helmet.
run the compressor at 12 volts,
a car battery will be fine...vw preferred.
that can hang on you with straps.

so, safety first.
you have heat safety with the helmets
eye protection with the welding glass. no 3, dark series.
the air from the compressor will blow into
the spy hole and cool the cone.
wham...you see the cones.
easy.

and, then you can use your cell phone camera to take
a picture of the cones. save them, send them to friends
and other potters. put them on a website.
see, almost cone 5. be careful not to melt your camera.
plastic you know.
mel/inventor/potter/always the helper.
dolita can load her own kiln.

and what does your opthamologist say phil? damaged retina? cataracts?
i have one like you at home. his eyesight is failing as a result of looking
into spyholes over the years. i noticed last night that the welding glass
was out and handy for checking the spy hole. (i guess not all my "helpful"
comments dont fall upon deaf ears afterall)
i have a pair of regular goggles from the pottery supplier as well as a
square bit of dark welding glass. my first pottery teacher said to look into
the spyholes using a mirror... i dont know if that actually offers any
protection. he has bad eyes too.

Hi Anne,

No idea...haven't seen one in way over a decade ( no pun
intended...) but likely...I should be scolded...

I think a dark-glass as Welder's use, which may he held up
for the occasion, is the best idea...

Being so very bright here in the Summers, and my working
out-of-doors all the time then, and Kilns at-the-time, as
well as Brazing being new to me, I just squinted because I
was used to squinting anyway...

I do not have a kiln now, but if I did, I would use a dark
Welder's Glass...just hold it up to peek...

Best wishes!

Phil

Forget using the cell phone camera to take a picture of the kiln, I want to
see a picture of the helmet!
