i keep several lenses that are used in arc welding
helmets near my kiln. they come in about three strengths.
buck a piece or so.
they are dark, easy to use and cheap.
i put a thin piece of duct tape around the edge.

when folks are visiting when i am firing, i have them
pick one up, hold it in front of their eyes and look
in the kiln. they can see everything. cone 11, reduction...
you can see the cones just fine.

it is a great deal about protecting your retina. all that
bright light can be dangerous. and, doing it for 40 years
can be serious trouble.

i also have a pair of simple welding googles. they work.
not as deep shade as arc welding glass, but they
will do....they help.
so, for ten bucks you can have all the protection you will
ever need, for your entire life.

i also keep a square of fiberfax board near the kiln.
the tight stuff. it has been bisque fired.
with a small welding torch i have people put their
fingers on the back side...i heat up the front red hot.
they cannot feel the heat.
`man, is that amazing..tiles from the space shuttle, man
oh man...science in action`.
no heat transfer.
helps them understand the kiln.
a teacher moment.
