U.F.'s Harn Museum is sponsoring Jeff Oestreich, who will be working in
U.F. Ceramics studios. Limited space is available for the studio demo,
as mentioned below. The public lecture is open. This event is in
conjunction with the "Dark Jewels" show of historic Chinese Ceramics
with high-iron glazes at the Harn October 19, 2004 to Jan. 2, 2005. See
the Future exhibits link on this page for details about the show:
http://www.harn.ufl.edu/ .

Also up will be Asian Art: Culture and Context, a nice pairing with the
"Dark Jewels" show. Admission to the Harn is free.

If you're coming for the lecture only and want to make a day of it, next
door to the Harn Museum is the natural history museum which has some
great exhibits, and their new butterfly rainforest research area. There
is an admission charge for the butterfly rainforest, but the FL Museum
of Natural History is free.

JEFFREY OESTREICH - CERAMIC ARTIST DEMONSTRATION

Harn Museum of Art & University of Florida Ceramics Department

Friday, October 22, 2004

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Join an internationally acclaimed ceramicist in the studio for a
full-day demonstration and discussion of processes and techniques. Jeff
Oestreich began his pottery training in 1965 at Bemidji State
University. He later studied with Warren MacKenzie at the University of
Minnesota, and then apprenticed for two years with Bernard Leach at
Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall. He exhibits and conducts workshops
nationally and internationally. Oestreich's current work is thrown and
altered, either by faceting, stretching, or cutting and rejoining. He
relies on historical influences for his glaze palette, with minimal
surface decoration and firing methods that draw from Japanese and
Chinese origins, and most of his pots are salt glazed. Oestreich's work
is included in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Victoria
and Albert Museum, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, among others. This
workshop is co-sponsored by the UF School of Art and Art History
Ceramics Department.

Fee: $15 members, $20 non-members; includes parking at the Harn Museum,
transportation to the UF Ceramics Studio, and a box lunch.

Note: Participation is limited to 25
