Snail,

Would it not be safer to just unplug/flip the breaker on the kiln and use a
propane torch to heat the element to red heat. Then use a pair of pliers to
guide the element back into the grove rather than trying to cram it in with
a piece of wood which will be smoking from the hot element. At this point
you may pin the element in place with another set of pliers if required.

Possibly. Heat it to red heat, turn the kiln off,
then use a piece of wood to push the element back
into its track while it's still hot. If it still
doesn't stay, use an element pin to keep it in place.
