Thanks for the responses about TCP vs. bone ash. It seems that about 25 =
years ago I ordered 100# of bone ash (the real thing) and have been =
using it ever since. Since I only use it for a couple of my glazes, I =
never ran out and never knew about the change to TCP. I'm looking =
forward to my Ohata Khaki not smelling like rotten eggs!

Bill Bryant...still doing battle with the wabbits. I'm starting to feel =

I bought 100 lbs of bone ash from laguna about a year ago for .30/lb, and
at that time every other supplier i know of was charging 3.00 /lb. Laguna
has since raised their prices on everything, most likely due to the oil
embargo, but you still may want to check them out.
By the way, i use ohata red all the time and, in case you haven't figured
this out, it looks really nice when fired to a hard cone 11, applied rather
thin, reoxidized at the end and cooled very slow. Even better on a light
body like bmix or whatever. In my kiln it comes out almost like a
crystalline glaze, orange/cinnamon/rust with iron crystals and never runs
at any temp, even cone 12.

Dear Bill,

I do not think the switch from "real bone ash" to TCP will prevent your
glaze(s) from developing a "fragrance"! What the bacteria/molds that get
into glazes like are ANY included nutrients. This includes the phosphates
that can go into solution from either bone ash or TCP, plus any "organics"
(sweat, skin, hair, cat pee, etc.)
