if you want a good image, one that will last forever, have
value.
be a crafts person.
i really don't give a rat's ass about
artist, image, modernity, and of course
the best one...`metaphor maker`.
it is mostly bs.
so,
stick with craft.
you will be a part of the long line
of men and women that work for quality,
and add something to the society they belong
with.
mel
had a pleasant afternoon with a very nice clayart
person yesterday.
she retold the story of being in a workshop with
a famous american/artist/potter.
his assistant in john lennon glasses, long dread locks
about 20 years old said to the group.
`i will never be a whore by making pots to sell
to the public.` in other words, potters are crap.
i said
`i bet he would apply and accept a `grant` in heart beat.`
lots of ways to be a whore.

Dear Mel -
With all due respect, I am trying to figure out what the hell this means -
"artist, image, modernity . . . . is mostly bs." Why, in your vast
experience and wisdom, would you post such a message. I am baffled, and I
would like an explanation. It just seems irresponsible, because there is no
truth to it. Craftsmanship and artistic expression are not mutually
exclusive. Every act of craftsmanship involves artistic expreission, and
every fine craftsperson is an artist. Why is this a problem?

Hi Mel,
This is funny stuff...I am amused...
Ye mention of...
> she retold the story of being in a workshop with
> a famous american/artist/potter.
> his assistant in john lennon glasses, long dread locks
> about 20 years old said to the group.

I'd have taken him aside and asked him if he knows the words
to "The Saint Louis Blues" or if he could at least humm a
few bars...( you know, Hali Salasi, Rastafarianism, 'dreds'
and so on...or, to remember
all them good looking field Artillery pieces back when,
with them double white-wall Vougue, or General Jumbo Tires
on 'em, on
Parade, and all them molassas 'Black' fellows in their
snappy serge Uniforms and them Horses and
all in the RKO or whatever news-reels at the Theaters at the
time...and that the St. Loius Blues having been Ethiopia's
theme song more or
less, and so on? )
Hell...he is ( 'just'?) "20"...we should not be too hard on
'im.
If I was "20" now-a-days, I'd be so pissed off I 'd be
radiantly glowing somewhere past the actinic part of the
spectrum...
Or, I'd say, "Pardner, if you think you got disappointments
now with this sorry assed culture, consider it a warm-up
pony-ride
excercise for the serious revelations and epiphanys yet to
come...so just hold on to yer hat...there's more, much
more...!"
And after we get done laughing, I recon I'd get him to ease
up some...
It ain't easy being "20"...
One can find one's self backed into a corner pretty
easily...he wants something, he just ain't sure 'where' it
is...
I can dig that...lots of people ain't any too sure
where-the-hell-it-is...
But even the sort of naive negativity he seems to have had
there in that moment, might just be the protective crust of
some gestating insight which when it is stronger with
itself, when he feels it don't need to be protected that
way, will be 'positive'...once it gets born and learns to
walk...
That was my thought anyway...
I could be mistook...too...just playing on an abstraction
like that...
But what the hell...
