What matters are several things; freedom of choice is one. The other is
the factor of drudgery or labor involved in your chosen work.
If you have the choice to decide that you want to "stay home" , there is
already an element of freedom there.
Having made that decision, you have as much right as any one to complain
about the non-rewarding aspects which are endured for the long term goals
. In the meantime , you have the delight as well as the irritations of
watching the child unfold and grow..
Ditto the person who has opted for the life of a potter..there are
aspects of drudgery there(you LIKE weighing out glazes? shudder) but all
work requires labor and when the joy doesn't make the rest worthwhile, it
may be time to examine decisions.
Everything we do requires a decision about process and goal.
Me, I loved never having to put on a made- for- success suit and being
able to play in the mud most of the time..Of course, sometimes I froze
while stacking in the winter and sometimes I had to repack more pots
coming home from the show than I preferred(hate packing pots) but that
drudgery came hand in hand with the work I chose..ditto , while an at
home mom in my pre potter life,I had to take my turn at cooperative
nurseries or car pooling.. I didn't love it but it came with the
package,(in my case three little packages.) And, there is an end in
sight... Many women have
3 different "careers"in their lives, and mothering is just one of them.
