gurus to guide me on...

Hi Mel, all...

I am Windows 95-98, so it's a no-go...

I do not know very much about computers but am learning
s-l-o-w-l-y...

My computer was 28 MB ram memory, but I upgraded it to
160...was 4 MB Hard drive, and I am thinking to upgrade to
more. A fellow t'other day was telling me he has a 100 MB
H-D that he says will 'fit' in the room there is for
it...while, I was originally thinking to upgrade to a 20...
(ie, into my homely little puddy-gray, circa 1996 Toshiba
"Satellite' 4015 CDS Lap-Top)...

So, for now, Win-95-98 is all I can have, with I gots to
have it with...

Systems resources say:

GenuineIntel Pentium(r) II Processor Intel MMX(TM)
Technology
160MB RAM
65% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (758MB free)
Available space on drive C: 758MB of 4117MB (FAT32)

I am on a D.S.L. line...

My Computer is fast and happy but I like the idea of it
being faster and happier too...

So, I am about 65 percent systems resourses 'free'...which
is nice...would have more if I could dig out old dead roots
from programmes and exe files and useless vestigual remnants
of things I long since more-or-less uninstalled...

Anyway, what do you think would be the largest hard drive
Capacity as I should consider to install?

Anyone know how or if I can upgrade to have more memory
capacity?

what of the 'information processor'? I do not know what it
is, but, may I upgrade it as well, and if so, what are it's
terms and so on?

What I do on my computer:

e-mail
Occasional surfing-the-net
Occasional forays into Microsoft 'Publisher' for generating
sundry office documents and the like.
e-bay - buying and selling

That's it...

I am thinking to get the programmes to allow me to make and
edit 'P.D.F.' files...and or to manipulate and edit images.

I do not store many j-pegs, or, not more than say 50 or
so...

Thanks!

Phil

There's a commercial product called X1 that supposedly has it all over
the cool and free Google Desktop search. http://www.x1.com/ But it's
pricey.

You'd be an excellent candidate for an eMac!

I think you mean 4GB.
I'm not sure about the 100GB. I can't find the Toshiba specs, but I
think the max is 60GB for that particular 2.5 hard drive bus.
http://www.cmsproducts.com/guide/index.cfm has more. Try calling
Toshiba.

Stay with W98. Maybe get rid of W95. Have you done the SE upgrade?

That will make a huge difference.

According to Toshiba.com and Crucial.com 160MB is the max for the
4015cds.

You'd be better off waiting until you can move to a new system,
although a hard drive upgrade would be easy and worth it. There are too
many variables that need upgrading.

If you want to get an idea of the various parts available
http://www.impactcomputers.com/toshiba-satellite-4015cds-parts.html has
a good breakdown, though their prices seem outrageous, 2-3x what you'd
expect to find elsewhere. But the parts section is a fairly clear
layout.

You may have trouble with the pdfs and not enough storage, but that can
be fixed. Otherwise, unless you're a finger-tapper, you should be okay
for a little while longer.

When I get my grant, I'll send you an iMac.
